After experiencing the challenges of family court in his own custody matter, Shaun pursued law school with a singular purpose: to practice family law.  He particularly enjoyed courses in contracts, property, and legal writing. He also worked at Help-U-File, a legal clinic that assists self-represented litigants. That experience gave him hands-on familiarity with local procedure, forms, and filings—skills he now blends with attorney-level legal analysis and advocacy. Shaun also completed 40 hours of formal mediation training through McGeorge’s Mediation Clinic.

Shaun passed the California Bar Exam on his first attempt and has practiced exclusively in family law since admission. He has been mentored by Certified Family Law Specialists throughout his career and is preparing to take the CFLS exam himself. He handles all aspects of family law litigation, including divorce, custody, visitation, support, and property division.

Shaun Brooks joined Mayer Family Law in January 2025, arriving with years of experience already under his belt litigating family law from another firm.  Shaun represents clients with a rare combination of legal knowledge, lived experience, and deep empathy. A Sacramento native, Shaun grew up in the region he now serves and returned to it after law school with a clear goal: to make a difference in the lives of families navigating the legal system.

Shaun earned his Juris Doctor with distinction from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law while working full-time as a single father. Graduating with distinction signifies that a student ranked within the top 20% of their class; Shaun was among the top 23 students in a graduating class of approximately 115 peers. He received his Bachelor of Arts in History cum laude from California State University, Sacramento—an honor denoting consistent academic achievement in the top tier of his class.

Shaun is known for being a reassuring presence in the courtroom, for being readily available by phone, and for favoring resolution over unnecessary litigation. When appropriate, he’ll respectfully push back against unreasonable demands—whether from opposing counsel or the court—and does so with clarity and professionalism. He regularly appears in Sacramento, El Dorado, and Placer Counties, and is currently the only attorney at Mayer Family Law practicing in Placer County.

Shaun is a dedicated father to his daughter and brings a parent’s perspective to his advocacy in custody matters. He hopes one day to help improve the family law system itself—making it more accessible, efficient, and humane for the people who rely on it.

Outside of work, Shaun enjoys cooking, sampling world cuisine with his daughter, tap dancing, and reminiscing about his past life as a personal trainer. Three of those four things are true—but we’ll let you decide which.
