Tessa is proud to be a Certified Family Law Specialist, a designation earned through a rigorous process that includes passing a second bar exam focused solely on family law, demonstrating significant depth and breadth of experience, completing extensive and ongoing legal education, and being positively evaluated by judges and fellow attorneys familiar with her work. Fewer than 1 percent of California attorneys are recognized as Certified Family Law Specialists.
Tessa has more than sixteen years of experience representing clients throughout Northern California in complex family law matters. Her practice includes high-asset divorce, business valuation, property characterization, custody litigation, support matters, and domestic violence proceedings. She represents business owners, professionals, executives, and parents navigating some of the most significant financial and personal decisions of their lives.
Known for meticulous preparation and thoughtful litigation strategy, Tessa believes that successful outcomes begin long before a courtroom appearance. She works closely with forensic accountants, business valuation experts, vocational evaluators, custody evaluators, and other professionals when necessary to build cases that are factually sound, legally persuasive, and prepared for trial from the outset.
Although Tessa is always prepared to take a case to trial when necessary, the vast majority of her cases are resolved by negotiated settlement. By carefully developing the facts, organizing the evidence, and evaluating each case from the outset, she places her clients in the strongest possible position to negotiate favorable outcomes. In many cases, that level of preparation encourages settlement because all parties have a clear understanding of the issues and the risks of continued litigation. When settlement is appropriate, Tessa is a practical and effective negotiator. When it is not, she is fully prepared to advocate for her clients in court.
Mayer Family Law is a family law practice founded by Tessa Mayer Roberts, who has been licensed to practice law in California since 2010 and has been a Certified Family Law Specialist since 2015. Based in El Dorado Hills, the firm represents clients in El Dorado and Sacramento Counties in all aspects of family law, from straightforward dissolutions to complex, high-conflict litigation. Many clients come to Mayer Family Law after months—or even years—of attempting to resolve disputes on their own or with prior counsel. Tessa earned her B.A. from California State University, Sacramento, where she repeatedly appeared on the Dean’s Honor Roll, and went on to graduate from McGeorge School of Law at the University of the Pacific, where she received Top Honors in Trial Advocacy. Since 2011, Tessa has handled all aspects of family law across Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado, Shasta, and Tehama Counties, and continues to serve clients throughout El Dorado and Sacramento Counties with precision, compassion, and a drive for results.
Mike Roberts oversees the firm's operations, client intake, and administrative management. Mike, Tessa's partner in life and business, is often one of the first people clients speak with and remains an important point of contact throughout their case. His professionalism, responsiveness, and commitment to client service help ensure that every client receives timely communication and personalized attention from the initial consultation through the conclusion of their matter.

When not practicing law......
Outside of the office, Tessa enjoys spending time with her husband, Mike, and their blended family. Together they are raising five children, whose schedules keep them busy.
Although her practice is demanding, Tessa values maintaining a healthy balance between her professional and personal life. She believes that perspective allows her to better serve her clients while remaining grounded in what matters most.
